MTV EXIT END GENDER VIOLENCE

Hey so its been along time coming but the project went down with the help and support of so many of you in America and the great turn out of volunteers. The event took place in Koh Kong down south in Cambodia on the boarder. Well this place was pretty far for everyone to get to so it was quite the treck for the 15 volunteers that came out to help however its considered a beach so many of the volunteers were excited about this most of them despite being from Cambodia have never been to koh kong so it was an over all adventure with a work component.  Liz had the brilliant ideas to get shirts made up so we could look more legitimate so she had these shirts designed and they came out amazing all the volunteers loved them! Naturally the first part of the project had to go not as excepted so that morning me and liz talked to an mtv exit rep who failed to mention to us that the venue changed which cost us 8 more dollars to have our Cambodian tent moved to the river side. However this new local was perfect for foot traffic and getting a variety of age ranges to entices people to draw on the shirts we did have prizes liz went out and bought some cell phones tennis rackets etc naturally the real prize was the cell phone. I also might add I never go the donation of shirts so I had to buy them Khmer market style u r wondering what this is refer to pictures but I bought 500 random shirts and had to wash them all by hand for this event my host mom started to pity me after the first 200 and started to help me =) but we ended up needing about 250 shirts for the event.  We bought a variety of art supplies hoping the shirts would be really unique and different this year, which I can say they were interesting however for the most part they were always done in big groups of 5 or more I guess its just Khmer culture. The shirts messages were more stop violence vs personal experiences though there was a few that differed from the normal message. It was cool to see how much people liked the opportunity to do art work it was fun to watch someone who has never used spray paint get to try there hand at it lol if you see all the scissors we bought were used as a stencil for said spray paint they are colors of the rainbow. All the volunteers also created shirts to show ex of ideas in hopes they would not all be the same which sort of worked bc I think the using paints on ones hands was pretty popular and they really liked to use the Chinese money and chain. Despite me and liz being less that ideal organizer the event was pretty well executed until it came time for the prizes and it sort of became a cluster fuck. Instead of us just picking the winner we let the participants decide in order to do this we wanted them to line up behind the shirt they thought was the best of course some cheating occurred where one group would have a lot more people with them but ahh it seemed like the only fair thing to do bc they really wanted to win. Jentee who has never done work like this and I thought would be the hardass started to feel sorry for the kids telling me what will we do when they don’t win bc they all kept asking her if they were going to be number one. The khmer Eileen across the street from me is a really quite shy person but she has a knack for education and handing out materials it was cool to see her come out of her shell and do more ngo work. Some peace corps staff came out to and liz students it was just a mix of so many types of people which made the event work so well but to see all these people interact for a weekend while entertain did become draining. Later in the day mtv exit remps came over to apologize about the mis communication I think in part bc the event ended up being bigger then they excepted and we really did help promote the concert for later that night thought not going to lie I wish they took us more seriously to begin with. That’s the thing about being a two man ngo with no name or back up or funding you have to put up with being considered lower of the food chain I hope this changes for me one day. Another cool thing that happened was some random guy came while I was at lunch to take pictures of the shirts and wanted to buy some of them and gave us 30 dollars for the cool idea.  That night what I thought at the time was the group’s idea to meet up for dinner at some khmer soup place is when things started to go ary. So a majority of the khmer people that came with us wanted to go eat dinner as a group and everyone seemed fine with that and going to get soup however that was not the case bc all the Americas don’t really like soup including me however bc I thought this is what the majority wanted I just planned to suck it up go and get food later. This was an issues bc they over order pots of soup and then I guess they thought even people who did not eat should pay however khmer culture they of course would never say it directly so instead certain people where upset sulking my khmer tutor was one of these people. That night we split up and some of went to the concert club and others got more food  it was not until the next morning that I started to realize something was sort of not right sigh what I mean by this half the group wanted to go to the thai market and the rest wanted to go to a waterfall or something. We had two cars however bc of the night be4 my khmer tutor in particular was on his guard to get his way which he is suborned to begin with but he would not listen to a word I said to him that morning. People often joke that him and me fight like brother and sister anyways I was trying to get him to understand we should take one car to each place not to leave people out but he rushed off and refused. Last night I talked to him about this cuz I was sort of pissed about his infantile behavior bc at that point and time he still never mentioned he was pissed. Anyways he realized last night he was wrong and he was sorry I sort of feel a bit like I don’t know if I could have changed that situation or handled it better. Looking back though at that point and time the project was done I was not going to boss people around or take a leadership role for where people want to go in their free time. Well the hour they promised they would be at the market was more like 2 and ½ so we did not go to a waterfall bc of lack of time we went to the resort with the mangroves and then had a huge sea food lunch with crab etc it was soo delicious. We headed back at 130 which means we got in really late and we also had to stop 5 million times on the way back home for fruit and other things for people to bring back to the village but overall despite some mis communication and cultural difference I am happy with the outcome of the project and the trip in general. Peace out from the other side of the world.
this is how it pretty much was all day for us minus lunch time

2 of liz's students starting there own shirt

Best Quotes from tabling

Okay so take back the night close pin line around the corner a few hundred short from goal needed we went back to lucky supper market. Since I have a blog post on tabling in Cambodia I thought this one I would just do best funny quotes convos I endured on my two day table excursion.

Random American couple about 50 years old “o what work r you doing that’s great but we come back every year for 3 months to work in the orphanages so we are doing out part already”
My response “That’s great umm any little thing we can do” in my head “im not asking for ur bank account if u have a penny that would be great”

A judge I think British “o I am a judge so I know all there is to know about violence I see it in my court everyday and I have so many charities I donate to already”
Me “o u work in the court system what do you think of all the corruption of the legal system Cambodia”
Judge “o that’s not my concern but I can tell you this you will never be able to stop violence or prostitution in Cambodia it is the fabric of there society”
Me in head “great the judge uses prostitutes every night and me putting a stop to that behavior is the end of his fun” what I actually say “well its certainly not going to happen with me alone there needs to be a cultural shift of equality between sex’s world wide”

Random ngo worker French “you know there is more pressing issues in Cambodia and you might want to concentrate on them”
Me “can you give me an example”
French dude “children that’s where it matters”
Me “sure children matter but we need to go to the root of the issues why so many of them are forcibility abandoned”

European Women 40’s “o your with the un I will never give you a cent” storms off
Me “wait I don’t work for the un that’s just some educational materials I have” quickly accepting a lost cause.

Repeat offender “why do I recognize you”
Me “ooo I know y because last time I did this you freaked out on me”
Repeat offender “o no what did I do”
Me “you told me that I should be ashamed of my self for working for peace corps and they are the worst organization ever they do more harm then good”
Repeat offender “omg that’s right but no I saw something about u yesterday… hey ur doing work for metahouse”
Me “yea hey how did you know that”
Him o im in charge of getting the funds for the project I like ur idea
Me in head “once hated by this dude now we r friends people really can change =)”

Missing his teeth dude “I have a Cambodian wife so im not like the expats”
Me in head “really that’s exactly what an expat does” Me “that’s great”
Missing his teeth dude “I don’t need to be educated on the situation in Cambodia my wife’s father beat her and all his girls”
Me “that’s terrible im sorry to hear that”
Missing teeth dude “yea he still beats people up”
Me in head “I wonder if this abusive father is the one who arranged his marriage to his daughter” me “well I hope you can find away to help the situation”
Missing teeth guy walks away quickly then turns around to tell me “ you see I could write a book on sexual abuses u have know idea how much I know”
Me in head “what else is there to say” “well sir I hope you do write that book im sure it will be an educational read”

20 something American SEXPAT in the Hawaiian shirt “I am going to read about your project first ill hit u back on my way out”
SEXPAT in the Hawaiian shirt “can you please define what your definition of sexual violence is”
Me “any unwanted forced sexual touch”
Sexpat in the Hawaiian shirt “if that’s the case I can’t in good conscious donate to your project”
Me “I’m sorry what about that definition don’t you agree with”
Sexpat in the Hawaiian shirt “when I think violence I think it has to be extreme and has to be rape with penile penetration”
Me “gives ample examples of violent sex acts from using a knife to use kissing someone to more extreme examples that his definition leaves out”
Sexpat in the Hawaiian shirt “but that would mean I could be considered a rapist and im not”
Me in head “yes that exactly the issues u don’t see ur self for the rapist u r bc u get away with so much and not enough people inform u that what you are doing is rape”
Me “well maybe that’s something u should be thinking about”
Sexpat in the Hawaiian shirt “you need to see how wrong you are and that if this is how you or ur organization defines sexual violence u should put it on ur information about the project so people know what they are donating to”
Me thanks for the advice

Okay so on the flip side I would like to say there were a lot of people who where engaged in learning about what we were giving out. Not to mention some people gave a lot of money in hopes to help a dead ancestor who was a victim of abuse. Just something to think about how seriously some people can take what me and liz say to them and how for a myriad of foreign workers in country feeling what they do is good enough and r above talking with me or liz says a lot. Anyways peace out from the other side of the world!!!

Khmer New Years you never really know what year your in dragon?

So this is a little odd but in Cambodia people are always telling me im different Chinese’s symbols and I think honestly in Khmer world no one know what year it is. I started to do some research on it because I discovered this year the time one celebrate the date was not the same so last year we started in the morning this year it started at night hummm??? So I ask why and apparently there is some physic they realie on who this person is know idea and he/she announces when is the right time to start the new years. There is some mythology with a king and his 7 daughters as well to represent the 7 days of the week they take turn carrying this kings head on a plate don’t ask me why except the world would end if they did not do this yea really but depending what day of the week it is matter with color etc and new years it taken very seriously. This yea the daughter liked the color yellow and bananas so there had to be more bananas then normal.  I was also not aware but there is not just one dragon but several types but this year is the golden dragon. This dragon is the very lucky and brings about more rain then any other year and thus far it has been true it was sort of freaky that it started to rain exactly on the time of new years only thus enforcing there belief system haha. Most volunteers spend April on vacation because its one of the few times that we all have off etc however I went away to India and used up all my vacation time and I sort of like to be in my village for khmer new years. It was not all that exciting o seemed less craziness then last year but played with water powdered etc saeed was riding his bike all the way to phnom penh and stopped by for a while which made my family supper happy and we went for a walk and I think Saeed was splashed with water far more then me but it was interesting. The last day I headed into the city as well to meet up with liz to go see hunger games I had to see what this hype was about we also had a grill out the fire for said grill out took us 1 hour to start haha if a Khmer person was there we would have been laughed at thank god it was just us to.  The city was a ghost town which was cool but erri in Cambodia for holidays its all about the villages never about the city in America its not really like that. Everything is shut down and there is limited stuff to do but we had work for the take back the night. The day I was going to go back to site my host sister jenta called me to meet up with her bc she really wanted to see titanic in 3d haha so in Cambodia I went and saw titanic in 3d I know random but have to say the 3d version was worth the money. I was pretty broke after two movies in a weekend however jenta and me decided to split a bucket for the entire family of KFC, which I never eat in America but is such a big deal in Cambodia. I also spent some time of this holiday with my host mom in the dump/river getting fruit having more random conversation and experiences. I guess with the new year I have to try to go back to that village physic to see what new insight she has in store for me this year though im not sure im ready to hear about my bad luck haha. Well until next time peace out from the other side of the world!!!

Take Your Daughter to Work

So there has been lots of mom time for me lately both Khmer and American though I have to say there work choices are very opposite. My host mom has been taking me on the winter melon truck runs lately, which has been possibly, even to Khmer for me. Most of the kids at this garbage dump/ river where we pick up the fruit are about 6-12 in age pretty sure all stopped going to school and have skin disease etc that deff need attention and desperate for money. They throw the melons, which for someone of them are bigger, then they are sort of sad to watch to make about 2,000 R 50 cents per truck which is about 2000 fruit. Now it shocked them to see someone like me and I also counted my self as there equal to help them out so I would stand in line and help throw and catch watermelons/ winter melons to speed things up. Now its hot I mean like 100 degree in the sun hot and I have finally given in that wearing long sleeve shirts is better with a kroma over my head to the average person walking by they might really have no idea there is an American behind my now ant worker motif. I tend to leave for the garbage dump/lake at 10 and I guess I should fill u in y I call it a dump well its where the floating villages are so surrounding the land area is where everyone dumps trash and on top of that cows roam free trying to steal fruit with the toxic looking water so it’s a real mess. Well once we get there its about lunch time so my host mom always packs us lunch ill give you a hint I always have to eat this with every meal ahh u guessed it RICE and a fryed egg etc and a watermelon for after. Then we spend the next couple hours just wating the boat people tend to lie and say a time but its off by about 3 hours or so. By the time the boats come my host mom is already off wondering solo for a 2nd boat so she can squeeze even more fruit into this truck. In the mean time I am the entertainment where every person can line up in a row and ask me the same inane question of where is my husband kids why do I come here what do I mean I live in Cambodia blah blah blah. However a few times I have had some funny convos some of the younger 30-40 year olds like to see what type of bad khmer words I know so one day I am sitting with them and they are all telling me why khmer men suck and I agree with them and inform me who is divorced why etc. then the conversation turns to this one divorcee and they are like but she is so hungry in Khmer “clean” and im thinking o she had no money for rice and assumed I would be asked for money but not so after I say o you don’t have money for food they are burst out laughing. I am clearly missing the joke so I sit around and im trying to figure it out and they finally tell me like basically no she is horney. So I just joke back with them and say o just play with ur self and they were dying bc they did not except me to play speak back and go further then they went with there ot sopheaup Khmer aka not polite Khmer but they appreciated it I think. Finally its time for the tossing work aspect of this trip not going to lie it wears me out im on uneven ground catching uneven heavy object with what always feels like not enough water in me to sustain my energy. However eventually after a few times of my visit I think some of the kids who were left out got sort of mad at me for taking what they deemed there job so eventually I had less of an active role. After my mom’s visit this also slowed down the work I was allowed to take on bc everything that was hard work was deemed to much and that “if my mom saw me she would pitty me and cry” I kept saying no its okay but my host mom did not want my real mom to be sad so I was told no to things I was doing in the past o well. Now on the way home this one time physics finally caught up to the reality of the situation and all the tires popped from to much weight aka the truck does not like having 2500 watermelon’s in the bed of the truck. We were not to far from home so I walked back I would have taken a moto but it was on the high way and peace corps doest allow us to it sucks in times like that when shit goes wrong. Well when they finally get the truck to the house its like 3am and im pretty sure no one in my family slept that night. Well the next day is when the shit storm came people can not go on no sleep and not fight however what happened that next day was pretty much not culturally allowed and I had o idea what to do. So jentee and my host mom get in a huge fight I will not go into details bc I know you the reader like when I keep things up beat so while this next part is sort of sad its deff funny if ur not in it. Well my host mom is so angry like I never seen her soo pissed and face losing in my life. She starts to pack her bags to go leave with no money and tells me she is going to be the same as a crazy person and just wonder around at night. She will not talk to anyone but me, which is bad bc my Khmer skills cant handle angry mom lol. Well before I know it she is drinking beer she doest drink bc she goes to the wat and when ur old in Cambodia ur not allowed to drink so one beer and she would have been gone but she proceed to chug 4 in a row by her 5th I tried to take it from her like this is bad. I go to eat lunch when jentee see her trying to re drink and at this point jentee is like you have to take care of her she will not talk to anyone eles so I stop eating lunch run back up to the house to sit with her for the rest of the day playing babysitter. Anyways she is telling me how much none of her kids care about her and that they don’t care how poor she is because she gave them all her money. Then she proceeds to go look for something to write with luckly it was chalk so it could be later erased to write in khmer on the all how her children don’t help her etc and the only person who loves her is me and veiou. If this could not get any more whacked out she wants to make jentee to pay for making her lose face and is telling me how she is going to run out into the street naked and kill her self. To top that off she then gets her secret money stash and all her gold jewelry gives it to me in a sock making me promises not to give it to jentee and tells me that after she dies to make sure she has a good funeral sort of a day and whatever is left is for me yea really. At this point she is three sheets to the wind and keeps re saying the same shit and is now starting to yell at my host dad who is trying to fight back but I send him away saying now is not the time which I guess he was grateful for later because he thanked me later on. Well jentu is someone who can handle her better however she was refusing to talk to her until finally I convinced her that she could tell her off if she is that mad at her and jentu handled it much better then I would bc I just cant not fight back when people say crazy shit. Jentu kept trying to feed her to sober up but she would not stop bitching and freaking out telling them how I was the only child who mattered I kept trying to tell her that I am not better then them that I fight with my mom and don’t keep my mouth shut. Finally me and jentu got her to lie down to take a nap. Then I went to go deal with jentee who was soo upset about this whole thing and they all used to freak out a lot more for me to see stuff like this however now they just sort of accept that I will see this shit happen and are less worried about losing face. As im talking to her telling her you know its not your fault bc my mom was saying really crazy whacked out not nice things about her she starts to hysterically cry so I talk to her for a while at least this convo can be in eng though I think for her sake I tried to mix it up I don’t know about u but if im in a freak out mood I don’t want to be thinking in my 2nd la. Luckily this weekend I had meetings so I was able to escape bc that next day my host mom was still supper pissed but by the time I came back home she was really sick from drinking days later and had chilled out. I guess its true what they say mother daughter relationships are the most complicated relationships there are. Until next time peace out from the other side of the world!!!!!
